" Equine Passports" Please be aware that by law, all persons travelling with horses/ponies MUST have the animals passports with them at all times. We have been advised that random spot checks will be made at shows and events on passports. The Food Standards Agency will be responsible for enforcing the checks carried out at slaughterhouses, and the Local Authorities (e.g. Trading Standards) will be responsible for enforcing the law elsewhere. As with all Government legislation, there are penalties that can be applied by the courts for non-compliance. Most offences attract a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum £5,000 or two years imprisonment, or both. It is your responsibility to comply with the law, it is not the responsibility of Soar Valley Riding Club to check on passports. For full details of the Equine passport legislation please see the DEFRA website www.defra.gov.uk – Livestock movements, ID & tracing Horses homepage – Horse Passports Q & A.
